ALEC has today welcomed the Australian Government’s recognition of the contribution the live export industry makes to the improvement of animal welfare standards across the world.
In its renewed National Statement on Animal Welfare, the Government includes an example which recognises the investment the live export industry has made in collaboration with importers and the Vietnamese Government in Vietnam to raise standards across the supply chain for cattle.
ALEC CEO Mark Harvey-Sutton said it demonstrated that Australian exporters set the standard globally for animal welfare.
“This goes to show that the innovation and relationships between Australian exporters and Vietnamese importers has led to net positive outcomes for animals across the world,”
He said the industry led the world in animal welfare with research and development contributing to higher standards in many importing countries.
“Having recently been in-market in the Middle East, it is clear to see that Australian standards create better outcomes for both local and imported animals in the market. If Australia vacates the market due to the Albanese Government’s misguided ban on live sheep, the ability to influence these welfare standards is at risk.”
“Exporters adhere to very strict standards and have improved the industry’s outcomes for the last decade. It is welcome news that this has now been acknowledged.”
