The Australian livestock export industry’s activities to improve animal welfare in offshore markets will again be in the spotlight with Dr Temple Grandin and Dr Bernard Vallat set to deliver keynote presentations at this year’s LIVEXchange Conference in Darwin on 25 & 26 November, CEO of the Australian Livestock Exporter’s Council has announced today.
This is only the second time producers, exporters, international customers, logistics suppliers and other trade services and stakeholders will have an opportunity to come together under one roof to discuss, debate and network on key issues confronting the Australian live trade’s future based on the theme of People, perspective and relationships.
“We are very excited to again host LIVEXchange and very pleased to have attracted such notable international speakers to this year’s Conference, Ms Penfold said.
“Anyone associated with the cattle industry knows of Dr Grandin’s incredible insight into livestock behaviour. She has researched and written extensively on humane handling and equipment design and is world renowned for her work.
“We are so pleased that Dr Grandin has accepted an invitation from the MLA/LiveCorp Livestock Export Program to undertake a high level tour of the Australian live cattle export industry commencing in Indonesia and following the supply chain back to northern cattle stations before concluding her visit with a presentation at the LIVEXchange Conference.
“Bringing a global perspective of industry and the challenges faced will be Dr Bernard Vallat, the Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health and Welfare (OIE).
“Dr Vallat and the OIE have a unique “line of sight” on the challenges of improving animal welfare, lifting standards and changing knowledge and behaviour towards animals across very different geographic, cultural, economic and religious circumstances.
“At the 2012 LIVEXchange Conference in Townsville, the OIE’s Dr Derek Bolton recognised Australia’s live export trade as leading the world in animal welfare and we look forward to Dr Vallat’s assessment of our performance in implementing OIE welfare standards 3 years on.”
Ms Penfold said that the two day program will commence on Wednesday 25 November and will include:
* A MLA sponsored producer forum discussing the livestock export industry and the joint MLA and LiveCorp venture known as the Livestock Export Program (LEP). Topics will include: market access, in market activities, RD&E and regulatory requirements of ASEL and ESCAS and what they mean for producers
* A diverse range of international and national speakers from within and external to the industry covering trade and market access, animal welfare, RD&E, and communications and community engagement
* Panel discussions will be held throughout the program giving opportunity for conference delegates to ask questions
* A trade exhibition; and
* A Welcome BBQ on the Wednesday evening and the industry’s annual Charity Gala Dinner event on the Thursday night where the Young Achiever of the Year and Life Member awards will be presented
This biannual event is a partnership between LiveCorp, Australian Livestock Exporters Council (ALEC) and the Northern Territory Livestock Exporters Association (NTLEA). The inaugural LIVEXchange conference was held in Townsville 2013 and saw over 300 industry stakeholders gather for this hugely successful event.
